Thanos was very much a two-dimensional character, one who served as a villain to the cosmic side of Marvel. Although Thanos is one of the strongest opponents the Marvel universe ever faced, he was never as complex as villains like Doctor Doom or Magneto. Therefore, the “court death” line strongly suggested that the MCU was originally planning to use the Lady Death storyline.Īlso known as the Mad Titan, the comic book version of Thanos would have not worked in the MCU – especially not with the Lady Death storyline. In the comics, the reason why Thanos would destroy entire planets was to court Lady Death, the physical manifestation of death. For those who knew Thanos’ history in the Marvel comics, that was a not-so-subtle tease to Thanos’ obsession with impressing Death itself. When warned that facing the Avengers would be the same as to “court death,” Thanos answered with a smirk. In the brief post-credits scene, upon learning of the results of the Battle of New York, Thanos expressed his respect for and interest in the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. That said, the MCU already knew that Thanos would be its first big bad – especially considering that villains like Doctor Doom and Galactus were by then off the table. Though The Avengers introduced Thanos in a post-credit scene, Marvel still had not decided when and how exactly Thanos would face the Avengers.Įven how Thanos would look still had to be decided, and while The Avengers’ Thanos was played on-camera by actor Damion Poitier, the later versions were made entirely with CG based on Josh Brolin's motion capture performance. In fact, Marvel has changed plans even when it comes to its most important Infinity Saga villain, Thanos. While the MCU is known for mapping out in advance how things will play out, not everything is planned ahead.
